Celebrating 75 Years of Pest Control at BASF Widnes

2024 marks a significant milestone for BASF Widnes, United Kingdom (UK), as the team proudly celebrates 75 years of excellence and innovation in the pest control industry.

The Widnes site of BASF plc is our Centre of Excellence for Pest Control, where we manufacture and pack rodenticides to high quality standards.  

Since 1949, the pest control business at Widnes site has been dedicated to developing cutting-edge solutions to protect health and property from pest-related issues. The Widnes journey began with the groundbreaking use of anticoagulants against rodents and being the first to commercialize Warfarin in 1951, which was the first-generation anticoagulants in the European market.

Over the years, all dedicated colleagues at Widnes site have continued to lead the industry with innovative solutions, joining BASF’S Agricultural Solutions family in 2008. Today, the team consists of around 34 passionate employees who are committed to supporting farmers and protecting the health of our global communities, one bait block at a time.

Lyndsay Penn, BASF Widnes Site Manager, underlines: “To celebrate we took some time out to reminisce and share stories, issue some commemorative jackets and enjoyed some home baked cakes. As we reflect on our past achievements, we are also excited about the future. We are unique as the only rodenticide manufacturing site in BASF supplying into a global market. It’s exciting to be part of providing leading and reliable pest control solutions worldwide.”

And Ian Armstrong, Process Improvement & Control at Widnes site, comments: “It's hard to believe the site has been active for 75 years. A wonderful achievement given some of the difficulties faced during that time. We've been through buyouts, takeovers, a large fire, but the site is still going strong. For me it's a testament to the staff who have worked here over that period, and who are currently in place. Here's to the next 75 years!”
